Performance: Black Box Dance Theatre
Discipline: Dance - Cultural Context: Hispanic, Latinx, North Carolina
A BBDT “school show” is quite an exciting event! BBDT Repertory work includes dances with themes ranging from pure athleticism, to collaborations resulting in wildly innovative dances, to the celebration of cultural holidays such as “Day of The Dead”. Every performance has full audience participatory moments. Students will learn about the history of modern dance and how its origins are rooted in American values of freedom of speech and equality for all. They will learn about shapes and how to move them with different qualities. They will learn how to “dance” a written paragraph, the physics of lifting with ease, and how to interpret a story that words can not contain! Once the process of making a dance has been “de-mystified”, the door is open for each student to develop their unique ideas and creatively respond to the show.

Performance: Luke Vandergriff: Pepito & The Trash Cans
Discipline: Music, Storytelling - Cultural Context: Hispanic
A bilingual, musical storytelling experience that promotes socio-emotional learning, while teaching Spanish vocabulary through the context of the story. The audience will experience a heartwarming story about a little boy in Bolivia who longs to play music but scarcity and misfortune stand in the way of his dreams. Finally, he overcomes by making his own instruments out of bottles, cans, and other repurposed materials.
This story inspires creativity, resilience, care for the environment, and an appreciation for cultural diversity. In addition, the audience will learn Spanish vocabulary as it is woven into the context of Pepito’s life in Bolivia. Music is played throughout the story and ends with a song demonstrating how Pepito and his siblings make music with bottles, cans, and other repurposed materials.

Performance: Cantamos Con Ritmo: Performance with Botsford and Witt
Discipline: Multi-Disciplinary, Music - Cultural Context: African, Caribbean, European, Latinx
Join international vocalist Elise Witt & cross-cultural percussionist Beverly Botsford on a bi-lingual “artsploration” / celebration exploring the Spanish language and the contagious rhythms of Latin America, Spain, and the Caribbean. In an inspired collaboration that honors traditions in a contemporary spirit, Elise & Beverly are the guides on a journey using the two oldest forms of musical expression, voice and drums. Students join in polyrhythms and vocal harmonies on everything from Cuban son and Chilean nueva cancion to Spanish flamenco and a Nicaraguan food song! “Cantamos Con Ritmo” is highly interactive with Spanish language songs, sign language, call and response rhythms and student participation on percussion. Music is a language used by people all over the world and a bridge that brings us together as one human family. When we learn songs and rhythms from other countries, we learn to appreciate what makes each culture different, special, and unique. Cantamos con Ritmo!

FWES PTA grows a community garden in the center courtyard. The garden is planted, maintained, and harvested by FWES families and staff. All the food is donated to the Dorcas Crisis Center for distribution in their food bank.
The PTA launched a new program in 2019 to buy books for students who may not otherwise be able to have a new book that corresponds to their current reading level. During the FWES book fair, the selected students are given a gift card to purchase as many books as they wish up to the gift card amount.
The PTA worked with school administration to revitalize our cafeteria into a more "IB Minded" space. New tables help create a more community-based atmosphere.
The PTA worked with school administration and our media center specialist to purchase new tables and chairs for the Inquiry Center. This refresh to a space used by all students and staff makes a big difference in functionality, as well as aesthetics!
PTA funded 5 water bottle refill stations. These units fit on top of the existing water fountains and provide an automatic, quick way to refill water bottles. This decreases the need for disposable plastic bottles and is easy for our younger students to use.
PTA worked with the Clark Family Foundation to purchase the big blue blocks for K-2 recess! These blocks encourage imaginative play.
PTA also works to appreciate all the staff during national appreciation days and weeks!
Over the last few years, PTA has paid for green top repairs, promethean board removals to make more space for teaching, and other smaller projects.
Our teachers and staff work really hard to help our kids. The PTA makes sure that they feel appreciated by keeping the staffroom stocked, supplying holiday meals, and breakfast and snacks on occasions.
The PTA funds student subscriptions to online resources such as RazKids and PebbleGo.
