Hook a Book … Catch an IB Attitude! is designed to meet the following complimentary goals:
• To encourage the students’ love of reading by engaging them in a fun-filled discovery of quality literature, and
• To stimulate students’ character development by encouraging them to relate the books’ characters and themes to the IB attitudes focused on monthly.
Here are the Monthly IB Attitudes for Hook A Book this year:
October - Risk Taker January - Open-Minded April - Caring
November - Reflective February - Knowledgeable May - Inquirer
December - Principled March - Communicator
Volunteer clearance is required. If you are not an approved volunteer, you won’t be able to read to the students. WCPSS approved volunteers can be parents, grandparents, other family members, or members of the community. You can register here.
Steps to your Hook A Book time:
Sign up for an available slot (see links below).
Please reach out to your child's teacher 2-7 days before your reading day to remind them. If any of these dates or times don't work, contact the Hook a Book coordinator. DO NOT CHANGE THE DAY OR TIME WITHOUT CONTACTING THE HOOK A BOOK COORDINATOR. This has been a problem in the past, so it is important to stress the importance of this.
Follow the instructions below to find the books at school.
Enjoy expanding young minds!
FULL HOOK A BOOK INSTRUCTIONS
Here is a video walking you through the process, or follow the written instructions below: https://vimeo.com/1016288539
First you must sign into the front office 15 minutes prior to the scheduled reading time. You must show photo ID to enter school.
Volunteers then go to the Inquiry Center.
Hook A Book Box: Behind the circulation desk, you will find a bin labeled “Hook a Book”. Inside the bin will be a binder, a vest, and the pre-selected books. After choosing 2 books, go to the appointed classroom.
Fishing Attire: In keeping with the program’s name, a fishing vest is provided. It is optional to wear the vest. The students enjoy seeing volunteers wear it.
Volunteers will share the IB attitude with the class and read the book(s) to the students. After reading each book, there are some questions provided (in front of each book) to have a nice discussion.
When finished volunteering, return the books to the bin in the Inquiry Center.
Hook A Book binder: please complete a brief report of your book and how it went in the log book. We review these to understand how the book, subject, and questions worked for the classes.
THANK YOU!
